Art
[rockyou 103594836]
During Term 1 our art focus is based around the personal identity. We have begun to explore the use of symbols and icons and ways of using these to represent aspects of our lives. We are exploring the use of these icons and symbols in pattern making, and will eventually present these in the form/shape of insects - either real or made up.
Room 18 will -
- Apply knowledge of complementary and harmonious colours to create tone and contrast in their pastel drawing.
- Use imagination and observation to generate ideas for a range of symbols that reflect themselves.
- Describe ways other students have used selected symbols to create an artwork that communicates ideas about themselves.
Here is an example of how our finished pieces may look.

The pictures above show the amazing Room 18 children with examples of their icon and symbol exploration and also the beginning of their pattern making. Pencil has been used in the drafting process, and will lead to the use of pastel and dye in our final pieces of work.
Room 18, this post if for you to express your ideas and give explanations and comments about your own art and the art of your class mates.
Give a detailed explanation of your icons and symbols and what they mean to you, and also give others some feedback about their work or ideas, just as we do in class.

Hi Room 18!
I have really enjoyed reading your introductions on the home page and really like the way that Margaret-Rae and Nina referred to Svetlana’s post.
Firstly, I apologise for the state of the pictures at the moment. I had intended running them through rockyou.com but the laptop was giving me issues…so, they will stay like this for the moment. Some of them are slightly unclear, but you will still be able to discuss your own work and the work of others.
Our blog is to build a community outside of school. Tell your friends and family about it, your overseas friends and family too, because you can now be heard all around the globe!
You should refer to another persons work or comments as part of our blog work. So as a starting point - use the art. Make postive comments, give feedback and ask questions.

Hi Room 18!
I have been busy down here in Rotorua and have seen some really cool things that we could use in our school.
I loved the way that Kate has begun discussing our art and making clear remarks to other people.
I can see Nina used repetition in her patterning, and has thought about using shape to make her symbols and icons clearer. My question is - what do your symbols and icons mean Nina? I am sure we would all love to know more about them.
See you soon Room 18!

Alicia - your photo is fine. It looks good. It would be great if you could still tell us about your artwork, and it’s symbols and icons.
There have been some great comments here. Remember to respond when someone is asking a question of you or commenting on your work.
Andrew.

This is Svetlana. My picture shows a kiwi and me and my Russian friends dancing. I used a kiwi because it is related to New Zealand and I drew me and my Russian friends dancing because I like to dance a lot and I like the snow and ice in winter in Russia. This is how to write my name in Russian: Светлана.
I liked what you wrote Iosa.
