Big Business and Child Labour
Posted by room18space on December 1, 2008
Many big businesses in our world are using child labour to manufacture commonly known products. In class this week you have been able to witness images and information about Disney. Other companies, such as Nike, and GAP also have been found to flaunt slack laws in some countries, to employ cheap child labourers to make bigger profits.
For this post you must find other companies that also flaunt these children. Use your own words, but if using some copy and paste, ensure that you include a link for other people to follow.
Tell the world about this terrible problem!
Link to the Disney Video:
I thought that I would also post CJ and Iosa’s video here also, so that others visiting can see their efforts to support Unicef and children in need.
Looking forward to your child labour posts Room 18!

Hi,
I was surprised no one else had posted as there is only 3 more days till we have to complete our homework.
Anyway I found out something quite interesting about New Balance,
The website http://www.nlcnet.org/article.phpid=105#ChildLabor
says that When in the past New Balance did have child labourers, they felt it was too hard just to kick everyone out because they would have nowhere to live so they decided that they would pay the children the same amount as the over 16s so the children would be able to afford food, water and maybe even basic education.

Hi guys,
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines01/1020-01.htm
Above is a link to an article saying that Nike admits that they used child labour.
Nike says that now they have made sure that they give all the children that have been working in the factories food and education and only rehire them when they are old enough.
But there have been cases in cambodia where Nike has been criticised by using child labour.
Click the link to find out more.
Bye
p.s. Great video, Iosa and CJ!

i found out that the big sports brab addidas use child labour to produce some of there products here is my profe
The Parliament will be told that clothes for Adidas were made in two factories using child labour, forced overtime and sexual harassment. Representatives of workers in two Indonesian factories supplying the German company,will tell Euro MPs that in the Nikomax Gemilang and Tuntex factories, in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, children as young as 15 were:
• made to work 15-hour days;
• expected to do at least 70 hours a week and punished for refusing to do overtime;
• paid less than $60 a month, rates below the International Labour Organisation’s demand for a living wage;
• penalised for taking leave during medical difficulties and had illegal deductions taken from wages as punishments for minor misdemeanours.

I think that it is so bad to have the reputation of child labour nowing that some things that you are wearing are made by children being forced to work.
